EXCERPT from chroniclebooks.com:
It’s time to fly home for dinner! In this witty picture book from award-winning and bestselling author Mac Barnett, a mother bird gives the bird next to her a message for little Peter. But passing messages on a telephone line isn’t as simple as it sounds. Each subsequent bird understands Mama’s message according to its own very particular hobbies. Will Peter ever get home for dinner? This uproarious interpretation of a favorite children’s game will get everyone giggling and is sure to lead to countless rereads.
Rationale for Inclusion: Everyone should have a soft spot for Mac Barnett by now. His books are always witty, insightful, well-loved and obsessively-read titles in any given children’s room. Telephone in particular is a great book about the morphology of language, our perception of what we hear versus what is being actually said. It goes a long way in helping children to appreciate their hearing skills and shows a sample of what can go wrong when we interpret messages to our own liking.
