Does any child like to go shopping? Not Llama Llama! But Mama can’t leave Llama at home, so off they go to Shop-O-Rama. Lots of aisles. Long lines. Mama is too busy to notice that Llama Llama is getting m-a-d! And before he knows it, he’s having a full-out tantrum! Mama quickly calms him down, but she also realizes that they need to make shopping more fun for both of them. Parents and children are sure to recognize themselves in this fun-to-read follow-up to the popular Llama Llama Red Pajama.

Rationale for Inclusion: Along with Anna Dewdney’s passing came the difficult realization that there wouldn’t be any more Llama Llama books. The Llama Llama series is sophisticated in its simplicity. They are always rhyming, which is a difficult feat in itself, but the rhymes are successful and help teach the language rather than being superfluous sing-song. Each book is built around the narrative of an emotion, and does the service of providing context and explanation to that emotion rather than just naming it. Children may have a hard time putting words to the expression of their feelings, so it becomes our responsibility as caregivers, parents, and children’s librarians to help provide them with context to their feelings. Llama Llama is bored at the supermarket and it makes him angry to be bored, angry to  not be doing exactly what he wants, but Mama has a way of explaining to Llama that chores aren’t fun, but they are necessary. And at the very least, they’re doing these chores together, which makes it more fun.
