EXCERPT from aisforactivist.com:

A is for Activist is an ABC board book written and illustrated for the next generation of progressives: families who want their kids to grow up in a space that is unapologetic about activism, environmental justice, civil rights, LGBTQ rights, and everything else that activists believe in and fight for.

The alliteration, rhyming, and vibrant illustrations make the book exciting for children, while the issues it brings up resonate with their parents’ values of community, equality, and justice. This engaging little book carries huge messages as it inspires hope for the future, and calls children to action while teaching them a love for books.

The illustrations are also multi-layered. Your child will find something they can learn to recognize on each page. There are new things to discover over multiple readings. There are references for grownups to “get”, and maybe even be a conversation starter. Oh, and there’s always a cat.

Awards: Winner of the 2013 Horace Mann Upstanders New Talent Award

Rationale for Inclusion: In keeping with our theme of diversity, this book uses powerful words and illustrations as it introduces children to the important concepts of activism, justice, and equality, while cleverly incorporating the use of rhymes and all the letters of the alphabet. Each letter of the alphabet that is presented seeks to convey a positive message pertaining to that specific letter, such as “E” for equal rights or “F” for feminism! The use of rhyming provides a fun way for these key concepts to resonate with children as they add new words to their vocabularies. This book not only provides a great way of helping children to develop a greater sense of awareness, tolerance, and acceptance to those from various backgrounds and cultures, but it also provides a great way for helping them to improve their literacy skills.  I would have to give this book an “A” for amazing!
